The story of Sella del Diavolo began when demons, fallen angels, lost sheep – or any other evil creature you can name – fell in love with Cagliari and decided to make that area their home. To achieve this goal, Lucifer recruited the best army he could. In no time at all, the coup began.

It didn’t last long. Unfortunately for Lucifer – and fortunately for all humankind – God stood up strong to protect the place. The Lord sent all those evil spirits away with only one stroke, leaving zero chance for his enemies. To make things more humiliating for Lucifer, the demon fell down from his horse, which made his saddle fly off, hit and shape the headland. Hence, the name. Devil’s Saddle.

As a counterpoint to the Devil’s landmark, the area around it is called Golfo degli Angeli (Gulf of the Angels). Fair enough.

Getting to Know Sella del Diavolo

Now that you know the secret story behind Sella del Diavolo, why not visit? The cape is located at the beautiful Poetto beach, on the southern coast of Sardinia. There are many buses heading in that direction from different areas of Cagliari (check out directions to get there).

One of the best ways to explore the area is to hike to the top of the mountain, which offers astonishing views of Poetto and Cagliari. Plus, you’ll get to see the very place where poor Lucifer’s lost his saddle.

Another incredible way to appreciate the area is by paddling through the turquoise waters surrounding the landmark. This allows you to see Sella del Diavolo and the Poetto shore from an entirely different point of view.
